Metal surface treatments

The right metal surface treatments determine how a part behaves in practice: wear, corrosion, friction, cleanability, and service life.

BO-Solutions supplies not only CNC precision parts, but also the appropriate surface treatment – partly in-house, but also partly through specialized partners.

One point of contact, one schedule, one quality standard that we strictly monitor.

Chemical metal surface treatments

Electroplating & coatings

These surface treatments for metal improve corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and functionality.

  • Nickel plating
For strong corrosion protection and increased wear resistance. Ideal for metal parts in humid or aggressive environments.
  • Chrome plating
provides a hard, wear-resistant, and glossy finish. Suitable for functional contact surfaces and visible parts.
  • Zinc plating (galvanizing)
A cost-effective metal surface treatment to protect steel against rust. Widely applied to frames, structural parts, and exterior components.
  • Teflon coating
for low friction and anti-stick properties. Ideal when sticking must be avoided or when products need to release smoothly.
  • Black finishing
A black, aesthetic and functional coating for metal parts where light reflection, recognizability, or basic protection is desired.

Anodizing: aluminum metal surface
treatment

Specific metal surface treatment for aluminium:

  • Standard anodizing
increases corrosion protection and enables decorative coloring. Perfect for visible parts and parts that are frequently cleaned.
  • Hard anodizing.
For an extremely wear-resistant layer (up to approx. 70 HRC equivalent) on aluminium components. Ideal for sliding, gliding, and loaded parts.

Passivation & phosphating

  • Passivation of stainless steel
removes contaminants and activates the protective layer, which optimizes the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.
  • Phosphating
Applies a phosphate layer that serves as a primer/adhesion layer for subsequent paint or coating systems and offers additional protection against corrosion.

One total partner for metalworking and metal surface treatments

For thermal treatment, hardening, coating, and anodizing, we work with certified partners. Your advantage:

  • One point of contact for machining + surface treatment
  • One planning and logistics process
  • One quality standard and reporting

BO-Solutions coordinates the entire process from raw part to finished product, treated metal component.

Heat treatments of metal

In addition to chemical metal surface treatments, heat processes are crucial to achieve the right combination of hardness, toughness, and stress distribution.

Hardening processes

  • Hardening & tempering
Combination of hardening and tempering for the optimal strength/toughness balance in metal parts.
  • Case hardening
provides a hard, wear-resistant outer layer with a tough core. Ideal for gears, shafts, and parts subject to contact loads.
  • Induction hardening:
Local hardening of specific zones (such as running surfaces, edges, or teeth) without affecting the entire metal part.

Specialized heat treatments

  • Nitriding (gas and plasma)
For a very hard, wear-resistant surface layer with minimal deformation. Perfect for molds, discs, shafts, and high-performance components.
  • Stress relieving
reduces internal stresses in metal after intensive machining or welding and increases dimensional stability.

Mechanical metal surface
treatments

These treatments determine how the metal surface looks, feels, and functions in contact with other parts or products.

Hardening processes

  • Sandblasting
For a uniform matte surface on metal parts, as a final finish or preparation for paint/coating.
  • Glass bead blasting
provides a fine, decorative, and smooth surface – ideal for visible parts or hygienic applications.
  • Laser engraving
For traceability and marking (logos, serial numbers, QR codes, batch info) directly into/with the metal surface.

Which metal surface treatment suits your part?

Not every metal surface treatment is suitable for every application.
Depending on wear, corrosion, friction, or specific requirements in food, offshore, or medical environments, a different treatment is necessary.

We are happy to help determine which solution fits best technically and practically.

Provide us with the project information. We will inspect the part and advise on the right combination of material, finishing, and surface finish.

A drawing, photo, material information, or brief explanation is sufficient to get started.

Fill out the contact form and upload your files.
